Gomis Mta — how to get there and what to expect
How to drive to Gomis Mta from Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi: route, road conditions, what to pack and when to go. A practical guide.

Gomis Mta is a mountain resort in the Guria region, sitting at 2,100–2,755 m above sea level. The reason people drive up here: clouds below your feet. You climb through the forest, punch through the cloud layer — and suddenly a white sea drops away below while a clean blue sky opens overhead. One of the most memorable moments in western Georgia, and absolutely doable as a day trip — though staying overnight is much better.
Getting there: routes from different cities
The resort is 33 km from Ozurgeti, the administrative center of Guria. All roads lead first to Ozurgeti, and only from there — up the mountain.
Good news: the road from Ozurgeti to the resort has recently been fully resurfaced. The pavement is new, the drive is comfortable. Any car will make it without trouble.
From Tbilisi
Distance — about 350 km, driving time — 4.5–5 hours. Route: E60 / S1 westbound to Kutaisi, then S2 south to Ozurgeti, and from there — 33 km up to the resort. Most of the way is modern, predictable highway.
From Batumi
Distance — about 120 km, driving time — 2–2.5 hours. The route runs through Kobuleti and Lanchkhuti to Ozurgeti, then up the mountain. From Batumi, Gomis Mta works perfectly as the first stop on a trip inland — the drive is short, and the contrast between sea level and the 2,000 m mountain air hits especially hard.
From Kutaisi
Distance — about 100 km, driving time — 1.5–2 hours. Straight south on S2 to Ozurgeti, then up. The shortest option of the three.
If you're traveling in a rental car and planning a western Georgia loop, Gomis Mta fits neatly into the route: Tbilisi → Gomis Mta → Batumi, or the other way round. It adds almost no extra time, but the experience is completely different.
Roads: what kind of car you need
To reach the resort itself — any car. The road is in good shape after the resurfacing, the switchbacks are gentle, nothing extreme.
If you want to go further — to the volcanic Chinchao Lake (12 km from the resort, at 2,500 m) or along the Bakhmaro–Gomis Mta jeep track — you need a 4WD. That's real off-road terrain across Adjaran summer pastures, not a place for a regular sedan.
In winter the road is not cleared. The resort gets up to 3 meters of snow, and driving up is essentially impossible. Don't push your luck without serious preparation — this isn't the route to test it on.
What the resort is actually like
No hotels. No restaurants. No pharmacy. No shop. Gomis Mta is a climate resort that deliberately stayed off the grid — and that's exactly why people come. Wooden cabins are scattered across the slopes, most of them private, some rented out in summer. A few local families sell dairy products: kaymagi, thick cream skimmed off fresh milk — try it if you can find it. So rich that breakfast turns into a real event.

The resort sits at the edge of the tree line. Below — dense mixed forest. Above — open alpine meadows, rhododendron thickets, and on clear days a view all the way to the Black Sea coast. The air really is a mix of mountain and sea, and people have been coming here for their health for decades.
In August the Gomismtoba festival takes place here: horse racing and folk contests right on the meadows. Worth timing your trip for it.
When to go
- June–September — the main season. The cloud-inversion effect (clouds below the ridge, peak in clear sky) is most reliable in the early morning from June onward. Daytime temperatures 15–22 °C, nights are cold — bring warm clothes even in July.
- October — the forest turns gold and copper. Fewer people, much quieter. The road is still passable.
- November–May — the resort is effectively closed. Snow is deep, the road isn't cleared, you can't drive up.
If your main goal is clouds below the ridge, leave early and be on the peak before 10 a.m. After noon the clouds often dissolve.
What to bring
There are no shops or infrastructure on the mountain — plan ahead:
- Food and water for your whole stay. Mountain springs exist, but don't rely on them alone.
- Warm clothing. Even in July, evenings drop to 8–10 °C.
- Cash. No one in the area accepts cards.
- Offline maps. Mobile signal up top is patchy.
- Tent or a cabin arrangement. Wild camping is common and nobody minds. For cabins, ask around in Ozurgeti or in Georgian travel communities — there's no central booking system.
- Firewood or a gas stove. Evenings are cold enough that warmth is appreciated.
What else is nearby
Gomis Mta works well as part of a wider western Georgia route. Within reach:
- Bakhmaro resort — 25 km via a jeep track (4WD only), another high-altitude spot with a similar character.
- Ozurgeti — the nearest town with cafés, fuel stations, ATMs, and a market.
- Batumi — about 100 km from Ozurgeti, a convenient endpoint if you're driving one-way.
A solid two-day plan: Tbilisi → Gomis Mta (overnight) → Batumi. Two regions, three landscapes, all of it in your own car at your own pace.

Practical road tips
- Leave Tbilisi early — ideally around 7 a.m. To catch the clouds below, you need to be on site before noon.
- The last 33 km from Ozurgeti take about 40 minutes — the road is new, but a switchback is still a switchback.
- Fill up in Ozurgeti before the climb. There are no fuel stations past it.
- After rain, the slopes above the resort can be slippery — if you plan to hike, bring grippy shoes.
- Check the places map on our site — key points along the western Georgia route are marked there.
Bottom line
Gomis Mta is a place with minimal infrastructure and maximum return: no crowds, no souvenir stalls, just forest, clouds, and cold air. The road is in excellent shape after the resurfacing — any car can make it. About 4.5 hours from Tbilisi, 2 from Batumi. Go between June and October; in winter the road isn't cleared and the resort is unreachable.
