Tbilisi to Kazbegi by Car — Route, Road and Tips

150 kilometres along the Georgian Military Highway through Mtskheta, Ananuri and Gudauri to Gergeti Trinity Church. Driving time, stops, tips and where to rent a car.

Tbilisi to Kazbegi by Car — Route, Road and Tips

Kazbegi is one of the main reasons people come to Georgia. Gergeti Trinity Church framed by Mount Kazbek, clean mountain air, sheep grazing right next to the road — all of it just 150 kilometres from Tbilisi. Driving yourself is the best way to get there, and here's why.

The road and how long it takes

There's only one route: highway S3, also known as the Georgian Military Road. No alternatives — and that's part of the charm. The road runs through Mtskheta, Ananuri, Gudauri and finishes in the village of Stepantsminda (Kazbegi).

  • Distance: about 150 km.
  • Pure driving time: 2.5–3 hours.
  • With stops: 4–5 hours.

The drive is so scenic you'll want to pull over every 20 minutes.

The pavement is good the whole way. The last stretch before Stepantsminda gets a bit narrower, but it's perfectly comfortable in a regular passenger car.

What to see along the way

Ananuri Fortress on the Zhinvali Reservoir

Mtskheta — Georgia's ancient capital, 20 minutes from Tbilisi. Jvari Monastery is visible from the highway, and if you haven't been there yet, stop. 40 minutes will reward you with unforgettable views.

Ananuri — a fortress right at the edge of Zhinvali Reservoir. One of the best photo spots on the route. Plan 30–40 minutes for a stop.

Gudauri — a ski resort at 2,200 metres. Quiet and cool in summer, busy in winter. A good place for coffee and panoramic photos.

Jvari Pass — the highest point of the route at around 2,400 metres. May be closed in winter due to snowfall; impressive the rest of the year.

Kazbegi: what to do once you're there

Georgian Military Road in the mountains

The main goal is Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba). It's about 8 km uphill from the village along a dirt road. Don't risk it in a regular car — the road is steep and rough. Local drivers in 4x4s will take you up for 15–20 GEL per person. On foot the climb takes around an hour.

Stepantsminda itself has several good cafes with mountain views, guesthouses and souvenirs. If you're staying overnight, book ahead in high season.

Practical tips

  • Leave Tbilisi before 9 a.m. During high season (June–September), weekend traffic to Kazbegi turns into one long convoy of tourists.
  • Parts of the route close in winter. Jvari Pass can be unavailable for several days after heavy snowfall — check the Georgian road service site before you set off.
  • Fill up in Tbilisi or Mtskheta — there is fuel in Kazbegi, but it costs more.

What car to take

For the basic Tbilisi–Kazbegi route any car will do. If you plan to head off onto dirt roads, drive up to Gergeti yourself or explore side valleys, take an SUV.

Bottom line

Kazbegi by car is a trip that stays with you. The Georgian Military Road is beautiful in any season, and the freedom to stop wherever and whenever you want makes the drive far better than any organised tour.
