Tbilisi to Batumi by car — everything you need to know

380 kilometers through mountains, vineyards, and Adjara. Route, stops, tips, and where to get a car for the Tbilisi–Batumi trip.

Tbilisi to Batumi by car — everything you need to know

Tbilisi to Batumi is one of the most popular road trips in Georgia. Around 380 kilometers through mountains, vineyards, and the subtropical lowlands of Adjara. If you've never driven it — you've missed a lot. And if you have — you probably want to do it again.

How long it takes and which route to pick

The distance is around 370–390 km. Pure driving time is 4.5–5 hours. With stops, photos, and coffee, plan for 6–7 hours.

The main route goes through Gori, Zestafoni, and Samtredia — this is the E60 highway. The road is good, mostly four-lane. Speed cameras are present, and the limit outside towns is 100 km/h. Along the way you can stop in Kutaisi, one of Georgia's most beautiful cities — a couple of hours there is well spent.

Where to stop along the way

Kutaisi old town at sunset

Gori — the medieval Gori fortress and the cave city of Uplistsikhe, 15 minutes off the highway. Two hours is enough to feel the place.

Kutaisi — Georgia's second-largest city. The Kutaisi market, Bagrati Monastery, and the Prometheus Cave nearby. If it's not your first trip to Georgia — definitely worth the stop.

Zugdidi — if you want to detour a bit off the highway, Svaneti is within easy reach from here.

Batumi: what you need to know

Batumi central square

Batumi is a compact, logical city. Navigation works well, getting around is easy. In high season (July–August) there are traffic jams around the boulevard and seafront — best to drive in early morning or evening. Overall, having a car in Batumi is a plus: beaches outside the city, trips into the Adjara mountains, Sarpi on the Turkish border — all of these are awkward without a car.

Practical tips before you leave

  • Fill up in Tbilisi or Gori.
  • Have some cash in lari with you: some cafés and viewpoints along the way don't accept cards.
  • If you're going in summer, leave in the morning. Traffic builds up noticeably in the afternoon, especially on Fridays.
  • The route is comfortable in winter — serious snow on E60 is rare.
